University Pathways

“I want to go to University”

If you plan to pursue a career requiring a university level qualification, you want to continue in to a professional career, want to study academic courses and want to work towards achieving a WACE, then the pathway to university is the one for you.

This pathway is designed to assist students to

  • Gain an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or
  • Complete an alternative entry pathway to university, and

In year 11 students will need to enrol in a relevant selection of ATAR courses including both List A and List B courses, or select a pathway that provides prerequisites for enrolment in Curtin UniReady or a Certificate IV. Students can also choose to combine one or two general courses, ADWPL Workplace Learning and or a Certificate.

We strongly encourage you to research the academic requirements for any future career aspirations before selecting the pathway to university and will work closely with you to ensure you have the best chance at achieving your goals. Our recommended resource is the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) website.

Refer to the Handbook for more information on university entry requirements and the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) courses.

Curtin UniReady Enabling Program

The Curtin UniReady in Schools Program is an academic program designed to prepare Year 11 and Year 12 students for successful entry into higher education. The program offers a pathway into university by providing students with the essential skills and knowledge required for university level studies, including academic literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and discipline knowledge concepts and principles. Students who complete the UniReady in Schools Program will be awarded Curtin’s minimum admission criteria of a 70 ATAR and English language proficiency.

Students are required to complete four units in total: two core and two optional.
How is UniReady different to ATAR?

Generally, students who wish to study at University will gain entry via their ATAR score, which is calculated from the results of their ATAR courses. However, this is not the only pathway to University, as we recognise that there are other non-ATAR students who will be successful at university.

Refer to the Handbook for information on entry into the Curtin UniReady program at EGC and which courses you can gain direct entry to.

Certificate IV

You can gain entry into university with a Certificate IV qualification by using it as an alternative pathway if you haven’t completed Year 12 or don’t meet standard ATAR requirements. Many universities recognise Certificate IV courses as evidence of your ability to study at a tertiary level. Once completed, you can apply for a range of undergraduate programs, often starting with a diploma or foundation course that can lead into a full degree. Each university has different degrees you can apply for and the entry requirements differ for each. It is important you research each requirement carefully.

Here is what a Certificate IV pathway could look like.

“I know the career I want”

Vocational Education & Training courses are governed by the Australian Quality Training Framework and successful completion of these courses is a vocational advantage for students who are aiming to apply for apprenticeships, traineeships and further TAFE study. The VET program at EGC involves a combinaton of a reduced timetable of 4 WACE courses over 3 days, typically 1 day at TAFE completing their certificate and typically 1 day in the workplace gaining hands on experience. Students will also be enrolled in the Workplace Learning endorsed program in which hours in the workplace and the completion of a log book will contribute towards WACE.

To be considered for the VET program students will have an interview with the Industry Engagement & Vocational Programs Coordinator, much like a job interview. The program is highly competitive and students are selected based on their interview, demonstrated work ethic, Year 10 report and other relevant details. It is highly preferable for many of the trade courses that OLNA Numeracy and Literacy has been achieved.
